Welcome to the makers of Ruggles® Ice Cream and our other delightful dairy products. Smith Dairy has grown steadily since 1909 when our horse drawn milk wagons were first purchased in Orrville, Ohio. Over the years we have added a production facility in Richmond, Indiana along with four distribution facilities in Toledo, Marion, Columbus and New Philadelphia, Ohio. From our humble beginnings of two horses and two brothers we have grown to 500 associates under the same family ownership and still just two brothers who represent the Schmid family.
Smith’s has grown to become synonymous with quality and service in the dairy industry for our products: milk, ice cream, cottage cheese, and a variety of byproducts. How can our longevity and success be explained? Our associates and their vision of working together as a team has led us to perform the impossible in serving our customers at much higher levels.
It’s not always easy, nor do we always succeed, but we strive to live up to the standards of our mission statement as stated below.
Smith Dairy’s mission is to treat our customers, our associates, and our owners according to the example of Christ.
The Three-legged Milk Stool can be used to describe our corporate mission. The three legs stand for the three most important groups to Smith Dairy.
The first leg represents our Customers. We all work to serve them. Without customers, none of us would be here.
The second leg stands for our Associates. To ensure that all of our associates treat our customers properly, we must create a satisfying and rewarding work environment.
The third leg depicts our Owners. Our owners provide the capital necessary to operate our business. We must manage our operations profitably to keep our company healthy.
It takes more than just three legs to provide a solid place to sit. The seat base tightly holds the legs together in just the right way. Without a solid seat as a foundation, the legs will not support anything. At Smith Dairy, this foundation is our commitment to treat everyone according to the example which Christ demonstrated to us.
